  • Meets American Simmental Association's requirement for AI sire and donor dam approval.

  • All our cattle are 100K DNA tested to get the most accurate genomic information about each animal. Adding genomics to genetic predictions is similar to knowing 10 to 25 progeny records on that animal before they have had a single calf of their own.

  • This genetic information allows us the opportunity to make the best mating choices for our future calf crop and helps in determining  herd sire or donor dam investments.

  • Take the  guess work out of parentage. We know with confidence who the dam and sire are of every animal on our ranch through parentage DNA testing, which is included in the 100K DNA test.

Structure | Data

  • We prioritize phenotype and correctness. Every animal is examined for balance, big feet and legs, with a focus on muscling and udder quality.

  • Calving ease, docility scores, birth, weaning, and yearling weights are collected to gather essential data on each animal. Analyzing this information helps improve breeding decisions, herd management practices and track performance traits.

  • Every calf is weighed as soon as possible from birth for accuracy and consistency.

  • In addition to general dietary balancing, added supplementary items are used to help reach our bulls, heifers and cow's genetic potential.  Heres what we currently use on the farm now:

Omega 3 fatty acids:  Enhance skin health, reproductive performance & semen quality.

Prebiotics & Probiotics:  Improvement in fiber digestion, consistent feed intakes & gut health.

Bioavailable trace minerals:  Immune system support response & hoof integrity.

At Roller Ranch, nutrition is vital for our herd health management. We work with Matt Honsey from Forma-A-Feed Inc, a nutrition consultant with over 24 years of experience. His expertise in balanced diets with essential supplements ensures our cattle thrive throughout their lives. Together, we maximize our herd's potential.

  • Our "on-farm" feed is sampled, processed & analyzed at a Midwest lab and a diet is ready to be balanced/made based off the feed sample results.

  • Our "on-farm" feed consists of several types of grass hay, alfalfa and silage. Some of the grasses in our hay consist of

  • Diets for the cattle are balanced based off:  weight,  breed, gender, age, season/weather & any other factors that apply to what we're looking to express on our cattle.

  • General balancing of all the diets on the farm will include balancing for proper protein, calories, fiber content, followed by mineral & vitamin supplementation.

Climate | Conditions

  • Living in Minnesota has its challenges with mother nature. Winters are harsh and frigid. Summers hot and humid. Spring and fall are everything in between. Our cattle have to withstand these extremes and our herd management practices have been tailored to assist in these extremes as best we can.
